Amy began her dance training at the age of five, learning RAD ballet, Jazz, Contemporary, Modern, and Hip-Hop. She instantly fell in love with the freedom, creativity and energy that she experienced. Amy started competing in solos at the age of eight and went on to become a student of the Wollongong High School of the Performing Arts.
In competitions and examinations, Amy excelled gaining distinctions and awards throughout all of her training years. Amy performed at the Opening and Closing ceremonies of the 2000 Sydney Olympics. Amy continued to experience dance as a joy and escape. Post high school Amy obtained a Diploma in child services / childcare as she knew that she wanted to work with children.
This qualification led to numerous jobs in the childcare industry including working with children at-risk and with Additional Needs across Sydney and the Illawarra. Amy is passionate about helping the disadvantaged and possesses a keen sense of social justice. Amy then began performing professionally in Sydney and overseas.
Upon returning from overseas, Amy completed the Certificate of Ballet Studies with the Royal Academy of Dance and gained professional registration. As a registered RAD teacher Amy was employed by schools in Sydney and the Illawarra and has experience teaching a diverse range of styles. Additionally, Amy became a qualified fitness instructor and broadened her expertise into helping adults and children to maintain a healthy body and lifestyle. This saw her instructing at local gyms across the Illawarra.
During Amy’s time teaching dance she realized her desire to create a school with a difference – not like any other. She takes her responsibility as a role model very seriously and works to build children’s confidence and self-esteem whilst encouraging self-respect and authenticity.
In 2011 Amy opened Awaken Dance and Fitness Academy where she is able to impart to her students the wisdom of her years within the industry. Amy believes in a balanced lifestyle and understands that some students wish to pursue dance professionally whilst others have different goals including fitness or artistic expression – each of these is important. Miss Amy individualizes training to enable achievement of these dreams.
